How much Is traffic worth?

October 11, 2008 · Filed Under Internet · Comment

Traffic is what makes or breaks the success of  a website.

Without traffic to your website, you might aswell not have a website. There are many ways you can get traffic to your site, You can do the right amount of Search Engine optimization. Sothat Search engines like Google and the like can pick your site up. You can share links with your friends on facebook and other social media websites.

You can do some ofline advertising. On your car, business cards, flyers ect. If you have a service that sells things online. you really need visitors to come and buy stuff from you.

If you really need visitors, you can Buy Visitors. There are many mediums out there that allows you to buy traffic. The most common and most popular is probably Google Adwords. In plain english… you pay Google to advertise your site.
If you have a R100 to use, you use it. You can set how much you want to pay per click.
Its advertising using links. So in my eyes, you pay for traffic. Whats great about Google Adwords, the people who click on the ads are actually interested in what you have.

I pay about 25cents per click. How much is Traffic worth to you?

What is domain Propagation?

October 11, 2008 · Filed Under Internet · Comment

I Recently moved the domain www.global-video-pages.com from a server in Germany, to a server here in South Africa, It took about a week for the site to get back online. Why so long?

It was because of DNS Propagation.
So what is DNS propagation?

Once you make changes to your domain with the registrar you purchased your domain from, the changes will take anywhere from 5 minutes to 72 hours for propagation to occur depending on your ISP and how often they update the DNS records.

Domain propagation is the process of your registrar handing off the changes of your domain to root DNS servers, ISPs acquire records from the root servers, ISPs to other ISPs and so on until you see the changes reflect on your computer with your internet service provider. Some service providers update their records more often than others and receive changes faster. As a result of this, often you will not be able to get to your website by its’ domain name but a friend can. Simply wait out until the changes propagate to your ISP.

My blog was down yesterday and the night before. I wanted to change the IP address of my domain. Gitui.com. After about 48 hours I gave up and chaged it back to the old IP address, and it worked fine. Because of that I knew that the DNS propagation was not even started. Because all the records still pointed to the old IP address.

That is briefly what  DNS/Domain Propagation is. It will affect your site and all your emails.

importance of tracking visitors

How important is it to track the visits to your website/blog?

I think its one of the most important things you need to do to have a successfull website or blog. Without tracking your visitors, you don’t know how many people actually see your site.
Why do you need to track your visitors:

  • Know how many people view your website
  • See where your visitors come from so that you can optimize your site for a more targeted area.
  • Know on what and where your visitors click
  • See how long your visitors stay on your site
  • Promotion, you can show off how many visitors you have.

There are many websites you can use for tracking. The one that I use is a service called Clicky. It has everything you need. It has a basic display, witch is free and there is a more advanced option, that you can do a whole lot more with, that you have to pay for. I think its really worth it.

The other one is Google Analytics. This is another great service from Google. Its completely free, all you need is a Google account. This tracks your unique visitors, it gives you a nice map layout of where your visitors come from. A really great service.

There are many more reasons you should keep tracking on your website or blog. I helps you alot with your optimization. It gives you more than just a tracking option.

My Philosophy on Links

September 29, 2008 · Filed Under Internet · Comment

Everyone is always going on about links, and how important links are for the success of a webiste. I agree with those people. I think links play a very important part in a website.

You get different “value” of links. A link within a blog post will be more valueble than a link on the side of the blog amongst other links.
Why?
People will much rather click on a link within something you are writing than go looking at all your links on your links page.

Some people sell links. Witch is in some way illegal. The more preferred way to do linking is by doing a link exchange. So if someone approaches you with a link exchange request, you add a link to them from your site, and visa versa. That is probably the most common links you get.

I think Links should be freely given. Not spammy. But given with love.
I really don’t mind if people post links to their site from mine. If I think its dodgy, then I will remove it. But if you, a fellow blogger or website owner want to tell the world about your site. I don’t mind.
I think that with that mindset you open yourself up to more exposure and links to your site. It goes back to the old saying. “What goes around, comes around.”

That in short, is my philosophy on links.

Do you differ in opinion?

Content is king, again…

September 26, 2008 · Filed Under Internet · Comment

As you all well know by now, I’m sure. Content is King.

What that really means?

Well, you can have as many links to your site as you want, It can be the most “pretty” looking site on the internet, and it can be the best Optimized site. But one thing you cannot Excape: Content.
When you write something, you have to sit back, read it, and as yourself if you would want to read what you have just written. I am no professional when it comes to writing. But I know that when something is well written, It gets allot more hits than a post that is not so well written.

When I write something in a hurry and don’t really spend time on thinking what I am saying, I barely get any visitors to that post. Sure, I get people looking at it. But they only spend a couple of seconds looking at the post.
It takes time and effort to write something good. When you write a page for you website or your blog post, you need to keep Search engine Optimization in mind, as well as the flow of your article. You need to keep your readers interested in what you have to say.

I find that when I read someone elses blog, if the article is too long I lose conentration and move on to the next thing. I will only really read a whole article if my attention is kept throughout the post.

If there is something mentioned in the begining that I want to know about, but only gets explained later in the post, I find myself reading the whole post.

What are your thoughts about Content is King? I know alot of people write about it, So I’m not going to elaborate on it. I’ll leave that to the pro’s.
