Quick links, easy Internet
I like my shortcuts. Whether it is shortcuts in windows or on my mac. Firefox or Internet explorer. It makes my life so much easier, and my job a whole lot faster.
The same goes for when I’m surfing the internet. I have about 3 toolbars installed on firefox. Google Toolbar, Stumbleupon toolbar and a bookmark toolbar. These toolbars are used more often than not during my average day.
I’ve gotten lazy over the last year or so. (when its to do with surfing) I don’t like typing out the whole address for my mail. www.gmail.com I just want to click on a button and it takes me to gmail and logs me in. When I visit forums, I don’t want to type out the whole URL, I sometimes can’t even remember the whole URL.
I think that is why social bookmarking has been so popular. All you need to do to get to your favorite site, is log on to your Social bookmark service and click on your links. I find that so much easier than typing out the URL manually.
I generally order my shortcuts in my firefox toolbar according to importance. So my mail will be the first icon, my blog the second, online SMS site 3rd, then TinyURL ect.
Install your favorite toolbar, add all your buttons and happy surfing.
The world is a small place
I Stumbled across a blog the other day, Stephen Murray’s blog.
Quite an interesting blog. While I was chatting to my dad this morning it turns out that he is an old friend of my Dad. So I logged into facebook and had a look at his profile.
While looking at his profile, I had a look at his friends list, and the friends we have in common. It turns out he knows my pastor, my Dad and even my cousin.
that got me thinking. The world is a very small place and gets smaller with the expanding internet. With Facebook, we have contact with just about anyone in the world. I find that the business world its just as small. I do ongoing work for a company and have built a really good relationship with them. While I was chatting to he MD the other day, I found out that he knows the owner another company that I do work for.
A lady that works there gave my number to one of her friends, When I got to the other company, I found out that they sold property to one of my other clients.
I was quite freaked out about the whole ordeal.
Whats my point?
No matter where in the world you go, online or offline. You can always find someone you know, or that knows you from someone else.
I believe that in business, its not what you know, but who you know. So if you tell the right person what your business ideas are, more people will know about it than you think. Word of mouth is the best kind of advertising.
To tweet or not to twitter.
I found this great post at problogger: 9 Benifits of Twitter for bloggers
I have now started to use twitter aswell. I’m actually enjoying it. Its strange because I was never really into things like this. But twitter is Different. for me its a mixture of Chat and a forum. And a bit of Social Bookmarking thrown in.
With me starting to use twitter. I also found TinyUrl. It takes all these long URL’s and turns them into short, small ones and takes you to that Long URL.
So this URL:http://www.gitui.com/sharing/important-things-to-know-when-changing-a-wordpress-theme/
will then be turned into this: tinyurl.com/5gxv28
Now does that not look better? it also saves space in the “tweets” and if you want to generally save space on a webiste, blog, forum or anywhere else you might need to.

Social Bookmarking
I found this really great video explaining Social Bookmarking on the internet. Social Bookmarking is a great way to share with friends while saving all your favorite links in a single social bookmarking website:
5 most important things on the internet.
Have you ever thought that there are important things on the internet? Is the internet important to you? if so, what is the most important part of the internet? Emails, news, social ect.
Here is a list of 5 things that I believe is Very important on the internet.
1. Connection:
Believe it or not, but some people fail to grasp the idea of being connected to “something” before they can use the internet. I had a client who bought a laptop the other day and could not understand why the internet wouldn’t work.
Connection methods could be a range of things: Phone line, bluetooth, gprs, 3G, wireless ect… But there HAS to be some kind of connection with your pc, to the internet.
Make sure that there is connection before you say the internet does not work.
most important thing on the internet nr2: Servers
You may not know it, or believe it, but the internet is controlled to a certain extent. Namely, Servers. You might think of a server as a computer in your office controlling your accounting package and running backups every now and then. These servers are really important for the internet. The are normally much bigger than the standard computer.
On them is Stored: Domains. (among others)
a domain is the last part of your email address or your website address, eg: gitui.com is a domain.
These servers control everything to do with the websites you see. Without these, the internet will not exist.
Then you get a DNS (Domain Name Service) server. A server that has a list of domain names linking “paths” to their particular server. Without the DNS working properly, you will never see or find a website.
Witch brings us to most important thing on the internet nr3: Search engines:
Google, MSN, Yahoo! search, Amazon, topicle which do you choose?
Anyone really, they all do the same thing. Without these you will spend hours upon hours looking for a website address. you will try all sorts of things, but never get to where you want to go. Try it, without using a search engine, try to find some thing.
Its not just searching the internet, Its what you do with those search engines that make the difference. When you search for something and you are looking for a specific phrase, try putting it in quotation marks. “Most important thing on the internet” an see what comes up as apposed to: most important thing on the internet, without quotations.
So thats why search engines are very important.
Next (4th) important thing is: Email
Now I know I’ve mentioned it in nr. 2 but it is really quite important.
In the world today we live in the information age. Information is important, as long as it travels fast and reaches people quickly. Imagine trying to buy something on the internet, Ebay for instance, without emails. You will have to sign up, and wait for your confirmation via the post. You will then reply to that message saying you really live there and are who you are. They will then send it back again to give you your password and other info you need. So with just signing up, it could take a long time.
What do you do when you can’t receive emails? do you stop working? Most of my clients can’t work when there is no emails.
The nr5 most important thing on the internet is: advertising
Yip, thats it. Allot of people use the internet as a medium on making money. www.problogger.net is a very good example. He advertises on his blog and gets money for it. You can advertise on his blog and draw customers to your website and maybe make a sale. In that way advertising is important in 2 ways.
I bet you never thought about advertising being important?
There are many more very important things that play a role on the internet,
Content
Accessibility
Information
Online banking
shopping - for those who can’t get out
Facebook
and it goes on.
That is, for me, the most important things on the internet. It is not in order and it changes for everyone. Depending on your needs, online banking could be the most important. It changes.
What is your most important thing on the internet?
