Companies that changed our world as we know it.
Posted on 20. Oct, 2009 by Robert Jooste in Internet
There are many companies out there that have changed the world. I know in my life there are a good couple that have changed my life and world. From day to day working to entertainment. Here is a list of a few of those companies that have changed my world:
Google:
Google has changed the internet as we know it. I cannot for a second imagine the internet without a search engine like Google. Google has chnaged the internet is so many ways, and now with the release of Google Wave, Its going to change even more. Here is some history on Google taken from Wikipedia.
Google began in January 1996 as a research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, a Ph.D. student at Stanford working on the Stanford Digital Library Project (SDLP). The SDLP’s goal was “to develop the enabling technologies for a single, integrated and universal digital library.” and was funded through the National Science Foundation among other federal agencies. In search for a dissertation theme, Page considered—among other things—exploring the mathematical properties of the World Wide Web, understanding its link structure as a huge graph. His supervisor Terry Winograd encouraged him to pick this idea (which Page later recalled as “the best advice I ever got”) and Page focused on the problem of finding out which web pages link to a given page, considering the number and nature of such backlinks to be valuable information about that page (with the role of citations in academic publishing in mind).
Coca Cola:
A company know all over the world and a recipe that cannot be duplicated, started as a medical company and now servers your favorite soft drink wherever you are in the world. From Santa Clause to the happiness factory. There are some things that would be very different in our world today if it were not for Coke.
Some History of Coke taken from about.com
In May, 1886, Coca Cola was invented by Doctor John Pemberton a pharmacist from Atlanta, Georgia. John Pemberton concocted the Coca Cola formula in a three legged brass kettle in his backyard. The name was a suggestion given by John Pemberton’s bookkeeper Frank Robinson.
Birth of Coca Cola
Being a bookkeeper, Frank Robinson also had excellent penmanship. It was he who first scripted “Coca Cola” into the flowing letters which has become the famous logo of today. The soft drink was first sold to the public at the soda fountain in Jacob’s Pharmacy in Atlanta on May 8, 1886.
Telkom:
Telkom has changed the world here in South Africa for us all. Telkom had the monopoly in South Africa for a long time and offered telecommunications to everyone here in South Africa, Bringing broadband to the South Africans. Even though a lot of us don’t like them very much, they have still done a really great deal for me. Changed my world.
Telkom has a really great flash video that you can use to learn about telkom and how they changed our/my world: Telkom History
Microsoft:
Everyone in the world knows about Microsoft. The creators of MS Dos and the very popular Windows. Microsoft has changed the world in terms of Computer usability and making them user friendly. There are many computers that don’t work with Microsoft ie. mac and Linux. But for the longest time Microsoft was (and probably still is,) the leader in its field.
Here is some history on Microsoft form wikipedia.
Microsoft Corporation is a multinational computer technology corporation that develops, manufactures, licenses, and supports a wide range of software products for computing devices.[8] Headquartered in Redmond, Washington, USA, its most profitable products are the Microsoft Windows operating system and the Microsoft Office suite of productivity software.
The company was founded in 1975, to develop and sell BASIC interpreters for the Altair 8800. Microsoft rose to dominate the home computer operating system market with MS-DOS in the mid-1980s, followed by the Windows line of operating systems. Many of its products have achieved near-ubiquity in the desktop computer market
Facebook:
Everyone on the internet knows of Facebook. Social media is the biggest thing on the internet since search engines and video’s. Facebook has changed the world Almost accidentally. From being just a college thing, to blowing up worldwide in a matter of weeks. Here is a brief history of Facebook, from about.com
Way back in early 2004 Mark Zuckerberg gave birth to Facebook, then at thefacebook.com. At that time Mark Zuckerberg was a sophomore at Harvard University. The name for Facebook came from the publications that some colleges pass out to students at the beginning of the year to help students get to know each other better, called a Facebook.
In the beginning there was Harvard and only Harvard. Facebook was created as a way for Mark Zuckerberg and other Harvard students to keep in touch over the Internet and get to know each other better. Facebook became so popular, in just a matter of months, that is was soon opened to other colleges. By the end of the following year it was also open to high schools. The year after that it was opened to the general Internet public, as long as you were 13 and older.
Those are just a few companies that have changed the world, or at least my world. What companies had an effect on you? any of these? all of them?
