Google can save you

Its the beginning of the year, first day back at work. The day starts of with a meeting.

Only to realize that our front page of www.global-video-pages.com is missing! The meeting goes on and we find out that someone wanted to change something, but in the process, broke it. A little paranoid I sit and think how am I going to get the whole front page of the website back.

After looking through the backups and files, I give up with getting the content back from the backup.

I sit in front of my laptop and while staring at google.com, it hits me.
I then did a seach on global-video-pages.com and look at the results. When I find the website, I clicked on Googles Cahe page, and to my relief, there it is! the whole page as is should be. I then did a quick copy and past, a viola! Its back to how it should be.

My day was really great after that.

Google Cahe? what is it?

When Google indexes your website/blog, it keeps a portion of it on their servers.

Google takes a snapshot of each page it examines and caches (stores) that version as a back-up. The cached version is what Google uses to judge if a page is a good match for your query.

Practically every search result includes a Cached link. Clicking on that link takes you to the Google cached version of that web page, instead of the current version of the page. This is useful if the original page is unavailable because of:

  • Internet congestion
  • A down, overloaded, or just slow website
  • The owner’s recently removing the page from the Web

Sometimes you can access the cached version from a site that otherwise require registration or a subscription.

Note: Since Google’s servers are typically faster than many web servers, you can often access a page’s cached version faster than the page itself.

If Google returns a link to a page that appears to have little to do with your query, or if you can’t find the information you’re seeking on the current version of the page, take a look at the cached version.

Have you ever read a blog and found out something really interesting? You go out to lunch and tell your friends about it, and it turns out to be completely false?

That has happened to me more than I would like to admit. Its embarrassing and makes you feel very small.
I work as a network specialist, and with internet every day. If I start post about “Britney spears being dead, or tell you that Pink has committed suicide because of some song that did not go well”. I will be talking rubbish.
